David Baughman

Director of Acquisitions and Dispositions, North America

Dave is responsible for the farmland acquisitions and dispositions program in North America, including sourcing and disposing of farmland investment opportunities, managing due diligence and developing strategic alliance opportunities. He works closely with HAIG’s Regional Acquisition Managers, Regional Operation Managers, Client Account Management and Resource Planning.  Most recently Dave was Senior Vice President at Hancock Farmland Services, providing oversight for the management of leased row crop properties in the U.S., as well as providing support for acquisitions and sales in the area east of the Rocky Mountains.  In addition, he was responsible for oversight of the development and direct farming operations for 2,270 acres of cranberries in Wisconsin. Prior to joining FMS in 1995, he worked as a farm manager for John Hancock for seven years, and for the company now known as Aventis Crop Science for eight years in the promotion of crop protectants to distributors, dealers and farmers. Dave holds a BS in Agronomy from the Ohio State University. He is a licensed Managing Broker in the state of Illinois and has earned the Accredited Farm Manager designation with the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

Associate Director, Portfolio Manager

Rick is responsible for managing client portfolios and investment strategy. Prior to joining HAIG in 2011, Rick worked in Financial Strategy for Forest Systems Management Company. Rick holds a B.A. in English and Philosophy from Providence College and a MBA in Finance and Real Estate from the University of Connecticut, where he managed a portion of the University’s endowment. Rick is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Society Boston.

Bill Devens

Associate Director, Agricultural Economics

Bill is responsible for developing price and farmland valuation forecasting models, global supply and demand balance sheets for agricultural commodities and assisting in the development of HAIG’s business strategy. Prior to joining HAIG, he worked as a strategy consultant for HighQuest Partners, where he was Co-Head of HighQuest’s consulting practice.  During his time at HighQuest, Bill was responsible for the completion of 200+ projects for corporate clients in areas ranging from farmland investment and grain origination strategies to market entry strategies to due diligence on infrastructure and farmland assets.  Prior to joining HighQuest, Bill worked for Bunge Global Agribusiness in roles ranging from international research to strategy development and M&A.  Bill holds a BA in History from Davidson College and an MBA from Thunderbird.

President, Hancock Farmland Services (HFS)

Carl directs U.S. property operations, acquisitions, leases and sales for HAIG. He oversees the farming operations and leasing for approximately 50,000 acres of permanent crops and 185,000 acres of row crops in the U.S.. Prior to joining FMS in 1987, Carl farmed permanent and row cropland for Newhall Land & Farming Co. He holds a BS in Agricultural Management from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and a MBA from Golden Gate University at San Francisco. Carl is an Accredited Farm Manager and 20 year member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

Debra Goundrey

Director, Client Account Management

Debra is responsible for leading the Client Account Management team and managing client relationships for HAIG’s institutional investment farmland program. This encompasses oversight of portfolio management, investment analysis and client reporting. Debra comes to HAIG with ten years of experience working with institutional clients globally and another ten years in banking and finance. In her various positions she has been responsible for and led teams dedicated to client management and service. At her previous employer, Blue Sky Alternative Investments, Debra led fundraising efforts for a water fund focused on Australia’s most diversified and prosperous agricultural region, the Murray Darling Basin. Debra holds an MBA from Melbourne Business School (Australia) and a BA in Agribusiness Communications from Curtin University (Western Australia). She was also selected for the Australian Rural Leadership Program in 1998-1999. Debra comes from a farming background with family ties to wine and wool production, and broadacre cropping.

Director, Resource Planning & Analysis

Hugues is responsible for ensuring that all farmland valuations, financial plans and farmland analyses for HAIG clients are performed on a consistent and reliable basis and to a high standard. In addition, Hugues’ new role involves acting as a liaison across a diverse functional groups within HNRG and its team members in preparing, managing or reviewing farmland investment models, property plans and analyses and ensuring that key deliverables are met. Prior to his current role, Hugues was Director of Research with MetLife Investments where he headed agricultural investment research to support the underwriting and analysis for MetLife’s $14B agriculture portfolio. Before joining MetLife in 2005, Hugues was Senior Industry Analyst with SunTrust Bank, a commercial bank with $190B in assets, where he was directly involved in developing a market risk analysis platform for the food and agribusiness portfolios. Hugues is a three-time graduate of McGill University in Canada. He holds a master’s degree in agricultural economics, a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and an associate degree in farm management.

Tom Sarno

Managing Director, Timberland and Farmland Operations

Tom is responsible for Hancock Natural Resource Group’s timberland and farmland operations around the world including current investments in North America, South America, New Zealand and Australia.  In this role, Tom builds on his experience and capabilities honed as the Director of Global Operations for the Hancock Timber Resource Group where he is responsible for developing and leading large scale, integrated, investor owned, and third-party forestry property management platforms for our timberland clients around the world.   Prior to that role he has served as Senior Portfolio Manager with HTRG, where he was responsible for account management and portfolio development for individually managed accounts and pooled investment vehicles. Tom has also served in the capacities of General Manager, Southern Division and Mid-Atlantic Region Manager for Hancock Forest Management. In those roles, he led a team of professionals who provided asset management, stewardship and fiduciary oversight for HTRG managed assets in the US South and Northeast. Prior to joining the firm in 2004, Tom was a Procurement Manager for International Paper’s Pensacola paper mill and McDavid sawmill enterprise. Among other roles, he has also served as Forest Operations Manager as well as Forest Analyst for Champion International Corporation. Tom earned a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida.

Andrew Strahley

Andrew Strahley

Vice President and Director of Australian Operations

Andrew is responsible for the ongoing management and growth of HAIG’s Australasian farmland platform.  Andrew joined HAIG at the inception of its Australia investing program in 2000 and has extensive experience in farmland agriculture, both domestic (Australia) and international with over 20 years in senior management positions with ConAgra, Mitsubishi (Aust) and the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation. Prior to assuming the HNRGA Directorship and Compliance Committee roles, Andrew has been the Managing Director of Hancock Farming Company Pty Ltd, the property manager for HAIG’s Australian assets since inception. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science & Technology and serves as a director on several agricultural boards. He studied Applied Science in Agriculture at the Charles Stuart University at Wagga. Andrew’s family has farmed cotton, cereal crops and livestock.

Managing Director and President

Oliver is responsible for the overall direction and growth of HAIG’s institutional farmland investment program. He is a member of the senior management team of HNRG and serves on its Executive Committee. Oliver leads the management team for HAIG, serves on the HAIG’s Investment Committee and chairs a number of company boards for HAIG’s Australian Investment vehicles. Previously, Oliver headed HAIG’s asset management function and was part of the HAIG senior management team. Prior to joining HAIG in 1997, he spent 5 years with the First Pioneer Farm Credit, ACA, where he was responsible for evaluating and appraising farmland and farm businesses for potential loans. He is a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the Association for Investment Management and Research, the Boston Security Analysts Society and a CFA® charterholder. He holds a B.S. in Agricultural Economics, with a concentration in finance, from Cornell University. Mr. Williams grew up on a poultry and grain farm in western New York and is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho.

Tim is responsible for marketing and business development for the Hancock Natural Resource Group. In addition, he is directly involved in account management and client relations for individually managed accounts. In this role, he works directly with clients to develop and implement investment strategies including evaluation of portfolio, acquisition and disposition opportunities.

 

Prior to his account management position, Tim was an analyst with Hancock Timber where he conducted acquisition and disposition analyses for client portfolios. Before joining the group in 1993, Tim was a forest analyst with George Banzhaf & Company, a nationally recognized forestry consulting firm, where he was directly involved in timberland valuation, wood supply analysis and timber inventory. Tim holds a B.S. in Forestry from Michigan State University and an M.S. in Forest Management and Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is also registered with John Hancock Distributors LLC and holds Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses.

Stephen is responsible for marketing and business development for HAIG. Previously, Stephen assisted with portfolio management and investment analysis for HAIG’s institutional farmland investment program. Prior to joining HAIG in 2005, Stephen was a business analyst for a securities processing institution responsible for credit risk management and prior to that he held banking and finance positions with Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley. He is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and the chairman of the NCREIF Farmland Committee. Stephen holds a BS in Finance from Iowa State University and a MS in Finance from Brandeis University and maintains an interest in the family farming operation in Iowa.

Sydney is responsible for leading product development initiatives on behalf of Hancock Natural Resource Group. She is also responsible for institutional capital raising across HNRG’s three business units, Hancock Timber Resource Group, Hancock Agriculture Investment Group and Hancock Renewable Energy Group. Prior to joining HNRG, Sydney was a Managing Director for Beacon Hill Financial Corporation, a Boston-based private placement firm with clients in the private equity buyout and energy sectors. Prior to Beacon Hill, Sydney was Manager of Project Finance with Alpine Energy Group, a private-equity funded power development firm. Early in her career, Sydney was a strategy consultant with The Parthenon Group where she performed a number of product development and marketing initiatives for global fortune 500 companies. Sydney holds a B.A. in International Studies and Art History from Middlebury College and an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. She is registered with John Hancock Distributors LLC and holds Series 7 and 63 licenses. She has also passed and held the Series 79 in a previous role.

Nick is responsible for business development activities in Australasia and Asia dedicated to raising institutional capital for new investments on behalf of the Hancock Timber Resource Group, Hancock Agricultural Investment Group and the Hancock Renewable Energy Group. In this role, Nick also supports HNRG’s Client Account Management teams and is responsible for the management of existing client relationships in Australasia and Asia. Nick previously served in the capacities of Vice President, Business Development and Resource Planning, Australasia. Prior to joining HNRGA in 2008, Nick coordinated the resource planning functions for HVP Plantations, before joining Pöyry Management Consulting, where he consulted on a variety of projects throughout the Asia Pacific, including forest appraisals, due diligence and strategic planning. Nick holds Bachelor of Forest Science (Hons) and Doctor of Philosophy (Forest Science) degrees from the University of Melbourne, and an MBA from Deakin University.

Cleidson Rangel

Business Development Specialist, Brazil Fund Manager

Cleidson works in the marketing and new business development areas for Brazil at the Hancock Timber Resource Group. He has over 15 years of experience in forestry, private equity, international finance and agribusiness both in the US and overseas. In his past experience Cleidson managed Phaunos Timber’s $250 million South America portfolio, including operations in Uruguay and Brazil and served as president of Eucateca, a $150 million eucalyptus greenfield project in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Cleidson has an extensive knowledge on emerging markets investments opportunities. He also worked in the Latin America investment portfolio team at Devonshire Investors, Fidelity Investments private equity arm. Cleidson holds a B.S in Economics from the University of Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil and an MBA from the Hult International Business School in Boston.
